Top Sustainable Initiatives in New Brunswick

Did you know New Brunswick boasts some of the highest and wildest tides in the world? The Bay of Fundy’s tides are so strong they force the Saint John River to flow upstream twice a day, every day! Furthermore, Did you know that New Brunswick is the world’s second largest exporter of peat moss? If you have ever planted a garden, then you probably know or have heard of peats moss. This is due to their incredibly moist climate and their flat plains. If we want to continue having such great natural reserves in the province, we have to make sure we do business sustainably. Therefore after careful consideration, we present you L’Autre Couleur’s Top Sustainable Initiatives in New Brunswick.

There are many more sustainable initiatives that we may have missed, so if you believe you should be in the Top Sustainable Initiatives of New Brunswick, feel free to contact us and we will evaluate your sustainable initiative.

Why is responsible waste management so important?

As most of us know, poor waste management can lead to social, health and economic problems for communities. Back in the olden days, plagues ravaged the lands due to vermin infestation, which most often comes from poor waste management systems. Yet today, in modern-day 2016, we now have a new set of factors we have to take into consideration if we want to keep our earth healthy. Even if you have a great waste management system in place that is keeping your community healthy, the current methods of disposal include the burning and/or dumping of waste into landfills. This is creating an abnormally high level of CO2 in the atmosphere, which in turn is leading to problems on a global-scale.

Our ancestors did not have to think about this, but we definitely do if we want the human race to continue living as comfortably and safely as it currently is, all the while keeping our planet in check. Fundy Region Solid Waste Company is making a huge difference and showing the other large waste management companies how to take a responsible approach to waste management.

2) Forest NB – The voice of New Brunswick’s forests

Top 15 Sustainable Initiatives in New Brunswick - 150 days of sustainable initiatives

Forest NB has been the voice of New Brunswick’s forest industry since 1957. They are a non-profit organization dealing with industry matters relating to trade regulation, government, public and environmental affairs. Sustainable forest management is their cornerstone! They provide a forum for the exchange of information, ideas and issues facing the sector and New Brunswick communities.

This company is a great example of a tri-sector athlete. It is bridging the gab between the community (and nature), the forest industry (the private sector), and the governmental organizations (public sector). To learn more about tri-sector athletes, we recommend you read about the burgeoning concept on the Harvard Business Review.

Another company that is working with waste management will be reviewed in Quebec’s Top 15 Sustainable Initiatives. Its name is Electrobac, and they focus solely on electronic waste, or e-waste as we call it. More to come in the next article.

4) Community Forest International (CFI)

Top 15 Sustainable Initiatives in New Brunswick - 150 days of sustainable initiatives

Based in Sackville, Community Forests International (CFI) is an environmental start-up, working to connect people and their communities to the forests that sustain them. CFI believes that rural communities have the skills, work ethic, compassion and inspiration necessary to innovate solutions for a better tomorrow.

One of their largest ongoing projects has to do with the small island of Pemba. They have provided this community with countless help, providing access to clean water, as well as giving hope to their community.

Another awesome initiative that Community Forest International is working on is tree planting. They have already planted over 1,000,000 trees!! This makes me think CFI could potentially work with Ecosia, to bring even more trees to be planted.
